Yesterday was 25 years ago that Microsoft released the first Windows, the 1.0, happy birthday Windows! The world’s most popular OS has gone through a number of versions since then, and the next iteration, Windows 8, is expected within 2 years.
The first version of Windows I got was the good ol’ 95. After playing with Macintosh’es from age 8 to 17, I decided that I had to check out the dark side of the computer galaxy and got my first PC. There was a bit confusion the first couple of hours, but I got a hang on it pretty fast and haven’t gone back to the world of Apple ever since.
How do one greet this birthdayboy in a proper way? The OS that has been my friend the last 14 years? With flatter of course!
Dear Windows, you keep getting prettier and more stylish as times go by. I mean – you are SO much hotter now than back in 1985! Now, I know you had some “work done”, and I hate to be the one to bring it up but you know it’s true. Nothing you should be ashamed of though – we all are cheering for you everytime you come back with something new and awesome! Happy birthday Windows!
But how did it all get started? Well, by the time it first got released, Windows actually was not a full operating system, it was a graphical user interface that ran on top of DOS. The super geek Bill Gates said at launch that Windows 1.0, which carried a suggested retail price of $99 in 1985, was “unique software” that would provide “unprecedented power to users today and a foundation for hardware and software advancements of the next few years.
And if you got nothing better to do on a Sunday than schnuffeling around the house in your pajamas like me – you can read the full 32-page Windows 1.0 press kit at this link.
